Delhi Vehicle Entry Ban From November 1: Which Cars Will Be Allowed and Which Will Be Restricted?
New Delhi: Delhi is set to restrict the entry of vehicles registered outside the national capital that do not meet BS-VI emission standards from November 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027, as part of its winter pollution-control measures. The restriction could affect commuters travelling to Delhi from Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Gurugram.
Which Vehicles Will Not Be Allowed to Enter Delhi?
Under the reported restriction, petrol and diesel vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not comply with BS-VI emission standards will be barred from entering the capital if they fall within the notified categories.
This may include BS-III and BS-IV vehicles covered by the restriction. However, the applicable rules and exemptions must be checked before travelling, as not every vehicle below BS-VI standards will necessarily be treated identically under every provision.
Which Vehicles Will Be Allowed to Enter Delhi?
The reported exemptions include the following categories:
- BS-VI petrol and diesel vehicles: Vehicles registered outside Delhi that comply with BS-VI emission standards can enter under this particular restriction.
- CNG vehicles: CNG vehicles are exempt under the reported measures.
- Electric vehicles: Electric vehicles are also exempt.
- Ambulances and fire tenders: Emergency vehicles are exempt according to the applicable provisions.
- Specified essential-service vehicles: Other vehicles covered by notified exemptions may also be allowed entry.
Vehicle owners should verify the final exemption list in the applicable government notification before travelling.
How Old Can a Vehicle Be to Enter Delhi?
The reported restriction is based on emission standards rather than a single vehicle-age limit. Therefore, the year of registration alone is not enough to determine whether a vehicle can enter Delhi.
For example, an older BS-III or BS-IV vehicle registered outside Delhi may be restricted if it falls within the notified categories. A BS-VI-compliant vehicle may enter under this particular restriction, subject to other applicable regulations.
Delhi also has separate rules concerning certain older vehicles. Meeting BS-VI standards does not automatically guarantee entry in every situation.
How Will the Delhi Vehicle Ban Affect Ghaziabad and Noida?
Thousands of commuters travel from Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad to Delhi for employment, business and other purposes.
According to the transport department estimates cited in reports, Ghaziabad has around four lakh vehicles below BS-VI standards, while Noida and Greater Noida together have more than four lakh.
However, these figures do not mean that every vehicle counted will be affected. The actual impact will depend on the vehicle’s registration location, emission category and applicable exemptions.
How Will Vehicles Be Checked at Delhi Borders?
Authorities are preparing to strengthen enforcement at Delhi’s entry points to identify vehicles that do not comply with the applicable restrictions.
Commuters using routes from Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram should check their vehicle registration details and emission category before travelling.
Motorists should also maintain a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate wherever required. However, having a valid PUC certificate does not automatically exempt a vehicle from an entry restriction.
What Should Drivers Check Before Entering Delhi?
Before travelling to Delhi, vehicle owners should:
- Check whether their vehicle meets BS-VI emission standards.
- Confirm whether their vehicle category is covered by the restriction.
- Verify exemptions applicable to CNG and electric vehicles.
- Keep their registration certificate and PUC certificate up to date.
- Check the latest official notification before travelling.
