100-Year-Old Delhi Race Course Mosque Gets Eviction Notice

100-Year-Old Delhi Race Course Mosque Gets Eviction Notice, Water and Power Cut in Nearby Homes

New Delhi: The historic Race Course Mosque, located near the Prime Minister’s official residence in New Delhi, has received an eviction notice asking its management to vacate the premises within six days. Officials said the notice was issued around October 19, 2026. Meanwhile, water and electricity supplies have also been disrupted in several nearby homes as part of a demolition drive in the area.

Race Course Mosque Given Six Days to Vacate

According to officials, the eviction notice identifies the land as belonging to the Union government’s Land and Development Office (L&DO). The notice reportedly raises concerns over unauthorised occupation and construction and directs the mosque management to vacate the premises.

The mosque’s water and electricity connections were reportedly disconnected on October 7 by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). An NDMC official said that a demolition drive was underway in the area following a court order and that utility connections to several properties had been disrupted after instructions from the L&DO.

Nearby Residents Also Affected by the Action

The action has reportedly affected not only the mosque but also families living in the surrounding Race Course Road area. According to officials, nearly 700 families could face displacement as the demolition drive continues.

Officials said residents had been asked to vacate the area and that alternative accommodation had been provided a few kilometres away.

Historic Mosque Listed in NDMC Heritage Register

The Race Course Mosque predates India’s Independence and is listed as a Grade-II heritage property in the NDMC’s heritage register.

However, the L&DO maintains that the structure stands on government land and considers it an encroachment. The mosque’s heritage status and the dispute over the land have brought its future into focus.

Prayers Offered Amid Uncertainty

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the mosque, prayers were offered there on Tuesday, according to officials.

The eviction notice, the disruption of essential utilities and the ongoing demolition drive have raised concerns about the future of the historic structure and the residents of the surrounding area. The dispute over the property’s status remains a key issue in the matter.
