49,600 Codeine Cough Syrup Bottles Seized in Ghaziabad, Three Arrested
Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: Police have seized 49,600 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup from a warehouse in Ghaziabad and arrested three people in an alleged illegal supply case. According to reports by Dainik Jagran and Hindustan, the consignment was valued at approximately ₹85.80 lakh. Police suspect that the stock was diverted from its intended destination in Delhi and was allegedly being prepared for transportation to Bihar. Investigators are examining the supply chain and the possible involvement of other individuals.
What Is Codeine-Based Cough Syrup?
Codeine is an opioid substance used in certain medicines to suppress coughing. Codeine-based cough syrups should be used only according to medical advice and the prescribed dosage. Misuse or excessive consumption can cause drowsiness, dizziness, breathing difficulties, unconsciousness and dependence.
Not every cough syrup containing codeine is illegal. However, the purchase, sale, storage and distribution of such medicines must comply with applicable regulations. Using these medicines for intoxication can pose serious health risks.
49,600 Bottles Recovered From a Sahibabad Warehouse
According to media reports, a joint team involving Sahibabad police, the SWAT team, surveillance personnel and drug administration officials conducted the operation at a warehouse in Kasana Crane Compound, Sahibabad.
The team reportedly recovered 310 cartons containing a total of 49,600 bottles of cough syrup. The operation was reported as part of the police campaign known as Operation Prahar.
Police said the three people found at the location could not produce the required documents relating to the consignment. They were subsequently arrested, and the stock was seized for further investigation.
Consignment Was Reportedly Purchased in the Name of a Delhi Healthcare Company
Media reports state that preliminary investigations indicated that the cough syrup had been purchased in the name of a healthcare company based in Delhi. The medicine was reportedly manufactured by a pharmaceutical company located in Paonta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh.
Police suspect that the consignment was stored in Ghaziabad instead of being delivered to its intended destination. Investigators are examining purchase records, transportation documents and the roles of the businesses connected with the shipment.
Police Probe Alleged Supply Route to Bihar
According to police accounts cited in media reports, the arrested individuals allegedly disclosed that the cough syrup was intended to be transported to Bihar. Reports also describe the suspected use of other goods during transportation to conceal the consignment.
Investigators are trying to establish how long the alleged supply operation had been running, which businesses may have been involved and whether the network extended to other states. Police are also examining the role of a businessman associated with the Delhi-based healthcare company.
Three Arrested as Investigation Continues
Three people have been reported arrested in connection with the seizure. Police are investigating the alleged illegal supply, the documentation associated with the purchase and the transportation arrangements.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details may emerge as authorities examine the evidence. The allegations against those arrested remain subject to the legal process, and guilt can only be established through the courts.
Health Risks Associated With Codeine Misuse
Misusing codeine-based medicines can lead to serious health complications. These medicines should not be taken without appropriate medical guidance or in quantities exceeding the prescribed dose.
The Ghaziabad seizure has raised questions about the monitoring of pharmaceutical distribution and the alleged diversion of regulated medicines. Police are continuing to examine the supply chain and the circumstances surrounding the consignment.
Further conclusions will depend on official findings and the progress of the investigation.
