Uttar Pradesh has intensified its efforts to control the stray dog population and reduce the risk of rabies. Between April 1 and September 15, 2026, a total of 75,006 stray dogs were sterilised and vaccinated across 17 municipal corporation areas in the state.
The campaign is being carried out under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Programme, which focuses on controlling the stray dog population through sterilisation and preventing the spread of rabies through vaccination.
Campaign Conducted Across 17 Municipal Corporations
Under the programme, stray dogs are being sterilised and vaccinated against rabies. The initiative aims to manage the growing street dog population while reducing the risks associated with rabies and dog-bite incidents.
Focus on Digital Records and Dog Mapping
Authorities have also been instructed to strengthen the identification and monitoring of stray dogs. Ward-level mapping and digital records of street dogs are being promoted to improve monitoring and make the Animal Birth Control programme more effective.
Aim to Reduce Rabies Risk
The campaign combines sterilisation with vaccination to control the stray dog population and reduce the risk of rabies transmission. The state is also working towards better monitoring and record-keeping of street dogs at the local level.
